Do I need IELTS for Australia as a UK citizen? When your passport is enough, and when it is not

Tips · 2026-10-13 · 8 min read

A woman checks her passport at a kitchen table beside a laptop and mug of tea, with rain on the window behind her.

For most Australian work visas, a UK citizen does not need IELTS. Home Affairs accepts being a citizen of the United Kingdom and holding a valid UK passport as evidence of both Functional and Competent English, and applicants for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) with a UK passport are exempt from the English test. A test only becomes necessary when a higher level is asked for: Home Affairs' Proficient English page lists approved test scores and no passport option. Employers, registration bodies and New Zealand's rules are separate questions, so check those on their own terms.

The short answer, level by level

Australia describes English in levels, and each visa says which level it needs. Here is how a valid UK passport lines up against the levels that come up most often for workers.

English requirementDoes a valid UK passport count?Where you will meet it
Functional EnglishYes, Home Affairs accepts it as evidenceFor example the subclass 186, where applicants aged 18 or over assessed as not having functional English pay a second instalment
Competent EnglishYes, Home Affairs accepts it as evidenceThe minimum for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) at the time of invitation
482 English requirementYes, UK passport holders are exempt from the testThe Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams of the Skills in Demand visa
Proficient EnglishNo, the page asks for an approved test scoreWherever a visa, a points claim or another body asks for that higher level

The detail is on Home Affairs' pages for Competent English and Proficient English. The same passport rule covers citizens of Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and the United States.

Why the 482 is the straightforward one

Home Affairs' 482 English page exempts applicants holding passports from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States from the English test. Applicants who completed at least 5 years of full-time study at a secondary or higher institution where most classes were in English are also exempt.

To see what you are skipping: for tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, a 482 applicant without an exemption needs, for example, at least 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking in IELTS Academic or General Training. That is a test fee, a booking and a revision plan you can usually leave out of your budget.

The key word in the rule is valid. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before you rely on it. gov.uk says an adult standard passport costs £102 online, HM Passport Office says you will usually get it within 3 weeks in the UK, and your new passport will carry a different number from the old one. Our guide to the Skills in Demand (482) visa from the UK covers the rest of the application, and our look at what the visa fee rise means for your budget helps with the sums.

Where a British applicant still needs a test

The passport takes you as far as Competent English. Beyond that, it stops. Home Affairs' Proficient English page asks for evidence of an approved test score and lists no passport option, unlike its Competent and Functional English pages.

That matters most on the points-tested visas. Subclass 189 applicants must be under 45 when invited and have at least competent English at the time of invitation, and they must score at least 65 points to be invited at all. Competent English is covered by your passport; if you want to show a higher level, check the points table on the visa's own page, and expect to sit a test. Our piece on what new research says the points test gets wrong explains why the scoring is under debate, and our round-up of the points boost for trades covers other changes floated so far.

If you do need a test, Home Affairs accepts C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, LANGUAGECERT Academic, the Michigan English Test, OET, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT taken at a secure test centre, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Tests delivered entirely online at home, such as IELTS Online, OET@Home and TOEFL iBT Home Edition, are not accepted. PractiseNow offers IELTS and PTE practice if you want to see where you stand before booking, and this article on how to pick between IELTS and PTE for Australia compares the two.

Employers and registration bodies set their own rules

A visa exemption is about Home Affairs. It does not bind an employer or a professional regulator. Nurses are the clearest case: the NMBA requires internationally qualified nurses to meet its English Language Skills registration standard, alongside its standards on criminal history, recency of practice and professional indemnity insurance. Read that standard itself rather than assuming the visa rule carries over.

The same caution applies to the bigger picture. Meeting a visa's English rule, a qualification or RPL does not make you a registered nurse in Australia; registration is a separate decision by the NMBA. Other regulated jobs can work the same way, so ask the employer and the relevant body what English evidence they want.

New Zealand: check Immigration New Zealand first

New Zealand has its own English rules. For the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), applicants whose job is at ANZSCO or NOL skill level 3 to 5 must show they can speak and understand English, and English test results must be no more than 2 years old; jobs at skill level 1 or 2 do not need this.

How a UK passport fits into that is a question for INZ's own pages, so read them before you book anything. Our guide to the Accredited Employer Work Visa for people in the UK explains the rest of the route.

How to check your own case

  1. Check your passport's expiry date. The exemption depends on holding a valid UK passport, so renew early if it is running low.
  2. Find the visa's English level. Read the visa's own Home Affairs page: Functional, Competent, the 482 rule or Proficient.
  3. Use your passport where it counts. For Functional or Competent English, and for the 482, a valid UK passport is accepted evidence.
  4. Book a test only if a higher level is asked for. Proficient English needs an approved test score, sat at a secure test centre, not online at home.
  5. Ask employers and regulators separately. Their English rules can differ from the visa's.
  6. Check New Zealand on its own. INZ sets the AEWV English rules.

Common mistakes British applicants make with English tests

  • Paying for a test the visa does not need. For Functional and Competent English, and for the 482, a valid UK passport is enough.
  • Letting the passport lapse. The rule says a valid passport, and a renewal brings a new passport number.
  • Booking an at-home test. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered entirely online, such as IELTS Online.
  • Forgetting the TOEFL tick box. TOEFL iBT takers must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when registering for the result to count.
  • Assuming the visa rule binds an employer or regulator. The NMBA, for example, has its own English standard.
  • Treating New Zealand like Australia. The AEWV has its own English rules on INZ's pages.

Frequently asked questions

Does a UK passport count as proof of English for Australia?

For Functional and Competent English, yes. Home Affairs accepts being a UK citizen holding a valid UK passport as evidence of both levels. Its Proficient English page asks for an approved test score and lists no passport option.

Do I need IELTS for the 482 visa as a UK citizen?

No. Home Affairs exempts 482 applicants holding UK passports from the English test, together with passport holders from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and the United States. The passport must be valid when you rely on it.

When would a British applicant still need an English test?

When a visa, a points claim or another body asks for Proficient English or higher, because that level needs an approved test score. Employers and registration bodies such as the NMBA can also set their own English evidence rules.

Can I take IELTS Online for an Australian visa?

No. Home Affairs does not accept English tests delivered entirely online at home, including IELTS Online, OET@Home and TOEFL iBT Home Edition. Book an accepted test at a secure test centre instead.

Does the same exemption apply in New Zealand?

Do not assume so. For the AEWV, jobs at skill level 3 to 5 need evidence that you can speak and understand English, with test results no more than 2 years old. Check INZ's pages for how a UK passport is treated.
