From working holiday to sponsorship in Australia: what UK workers on a 417 should check first
Visa guide · 2026-10-19 · 9 min read

Many Brits on a working holiday find a job they want to keep, and an Australian employer can sponsor a worker for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) if the role and the worker meet its rules. The 482 is a different visa built on one employer, one nominated occupation and at least 1 year of relevant experience in the last 5 years. Your UK passport covers the English test, but some trades need a skills assessment, and the employer, not you, pays to sponsor. Here is what to check before you raise it with your manager.
What the 417 is built for, and where it stops
The first Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) lets you do short-term work to help pay for your holiday, usually for only 6 months with the same employer. Home Affairs says that if the main purpose of your stay is to work, you should consider a work visa instead.
UK passport holders have more room than most. Since 1 July 2024 they can be granted up to three separate 417 visas without doing specified work, but Home Affairs says the six-month limit per employer and the four-month study limit still apply.
So a third working holiday can buy time; it does not let you stay with one employer for years. That is where sponsorship comes in.
How the Skills in Demand visa differs from a working holiday
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. It has a Core Skills stream, a Specialist Skills stream and a Labour Agreement stream.
| Point | Working Holiday (417) | Skills in Demand (482) |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides you can come | You apply on your own | An employer nominates you, then you apply |
| Which jobs | Any kind of short-term work | Only the nominated occupation, for the nominating business |
| Time with one employer | Usually up to 6 months | Up to 4 years with your sponsor |
| Work experience | None required | At least 1 year relevant, in the last 5 years |
| Family | No family members on the application | Partner and dependent children can be included |
| Health insurance | Strongly recommended | Adequate cover is a visa condition |
| Base visa charge | AUD840.00 (first visa) | AUD4,015.00 (about £2,103) |
The pound figure is a rough comparison at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 0.5238 pounds per Australian dollar on 22 October 2026; rates change.
In the Core Skills stream, the occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and the pay must meet the annual market salary rate and be no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 that threshold is AUD79,423, roughly £41,600 at the same rate. The combined list of eligible skilled occupations shows which list an occupation is on and who assesses it.

The experience test: 1 year in the last 5
Home Affairs says 482 applicants need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time.
That experience does not have to be Australian. A commis chef who spent three years in a Birmingham kitchen before flying out may already have it, while casual bar shifts in Perth may not match a nominated cook role at all.

Skills assessments and licences for UK trades
Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS depending on the occupation. It must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid, and it must have been done or started within the 3 years before you apply.
For sparkies, TRA says its Temporary Skills Shortage skills assessment is compulsory for the 482 as an Electrician (General) or Electrician (Special Class), with an outcome about 9 weeks after complete evidence is in.
An assessment is not a licence. TRA does not award Australian qualifications or occupational licences, and in NSW overseas-trained electricians and plumbers must also complete Australian context gap training and supervised employment. An NVQ or a completed apprenticeship is a starting point, not the finish line. For more, see why skilled trades are one of Australia's strongest migration pathways.
Raising sponsorship with your employer, step by step
- Check your occupation on the combined list of eligible skilled occupations, including its list and assessing authority.
- Count your relevant experience in the last 5 years and gather the evidence: payslips, references and duty statements.
- Find out whether your occupation needs a mandatory skills assessment, and start it early if it does.
- Ask your employer whether it is, or will become, an approved sponsor, and whether the salary can meet the market rate and the threshold.
- Agree a timeline that respects the six-month limit with one employer on your 417.
- Once the employer has lodged the nomination, apply for the 482 through ImmiAccount and arrange adequate health insurance.
- Get help only from a registered migration agent, a legal practitioner or an exempt person; check any agent on the OMARA register.
Who pays for what
Home Affairs' cost of sponsoring page lists employer fees of AUD420 to become an approved sponsor and AUD330 to nominate for the 482. The sponsor must pay all costs of becoming a sponsor and nominating, and cannot transfer them to you or your family.
It is illegal for a person to pay an employer to sponsor them, including through salary deductions. It can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment, and 482 applicants must not have asked for, offered, received or provided a benefit for sponsorship in the past 3 years.
To see the process from the employer's side, Employer Sponsored Jobs explains what Home Affairs checks in a standard business sponsorship application.
Beyond the 482: the road to permanent residence
A 482 holder's employer may be able to sponsor them for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for 482 holders who have usually worked at least 2 years full time in eligible sponsored employment, and applicants must usually be under 45.
Anyone promising you a visa, permanent residency or citizenship is misleading you, Home Affairs warns. Only the department decides.
Browse sponsored roles where your experience fits, such as this chef de partie job in Wollongong or a CNC machinist role in Sydney, and read why skilled tradespeople are moving up Australia's migration queue.
Common mistakes Brits make when switching from a working holiday
- Staying past six months with one employer while "waiting for sponsorship". The limit still applies to UK passport holders.
- Offering to cover the employer's costs. Paying for sponsorship, even through your wages, is illegal and can end your visa.
- Counting the wrong experience. It must be relevant to the nominated occupation and within the last 5 years.
- Leaving the skills assessment too late. Where one is mandatory, a 482 application lodged before it has started is not valid.
- Confusing an assessment with a licence. Electricians and plumbers still face state licensing steps.
- Taking advice from someone without a MARN. A person claiming to be an agent without a MARN or OMARA listing is not legitimate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move from a working holiday visa to employer sponsorship in Australia?
A Working Holiday visa is not itself a route to sponsorship, but an employer can nominate a worker for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) if the job, the occupation and the worker meet its rules. Home Affairs says to consider a work visa if the main purpose of your stay is to work.
Do UK citizens need an English test for the 482 visa?
Home Affairs says subclass 482 applicants holding passports from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland or the United States are exempt from the English test. Employers and licensing or registration bodies can still set their own English rules.
Does work on my working holiday count towards the 482 experience rule?
The 482 needs at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time, and relevant work in the UK can count too, so keep evidence of all of it.
Can my employer ask me to pay for sponsorship?
No. Home Affairs says the sponsoring employer must pay all the costs of becoming a sponsor and nominating a worker and cannot pass them on, and it is illegal for a person to pay an employer to sponsor them, including through salary deductions.
Can I stay on with the same employer while the sponsorship is arranged?
The six-month limit per employer still applies to UK passport holders on the Working Holiday visa. Plan the conversation early, so the nomination and visa can be prepared without breaking that condition.
Key takeaways
- The 417 is for a holiday with work; the 482 is for working in one nominated job for one sponsor.
- The 482 needs at least 1 year of relevant experience in the last 5 years, and UK passport holders skip the English test.
- Some trades need a TRA or VETASSESS assessment started before you apply.
- The employer pays the sponsorship costs; paying for sponsorship is illegal.
- Respect the six-month employer limit while the paperwork is prepared.
