Studying in Australia from the UK? Why an Australian degree may not lead straight to a skilled job

A degree in Australia can look like a neat route to a new life: study, graduate, find a good job, stay. A federal government study suggests the middle step is where many people come unstuck. More than half of international graduates working in Australia are in jobs below their skill level, pointing to a real mismatch between education, migration and the jobs market.

If you are in the UK and weighing up study in Australia as a way to settle there, the findings are worth reading before you enrol.

A decade of graduates followed up

The International Students Pathways and Outcomes Study, from Jobs and Skills Australia, was published in September 2025. It followed students who started studying in Australia in 2010-11 and tracked them to the end of 2023. It only covers the rules in place up to the end of 2023, before the changes brought in under the government's Migration Strategy.

Permanent residency: roughly 35 to 40 per cent

About 35 to 40 per cent of international students who began in the early 2010s gained permanent residency within 10 years. Among higher education and vocational graduates who could be traced in linked tax and employment records, the share was higher, with more than half becoming permanent residents within a decade.

The skills gap after graduation

Staying did not always mean skilled work. The comparison with local graduates is stark:

What held graduates back

The study named several barriers:

  • English-language ability
  • little practical Australian work experience
  • employer doubts about temporary visas
  • trouble getting overseas experience recognised
  • bias in recruitment
  • some employers seeing international graduates as less job-ready

English will rarely be the sticking point for UK applicants, but the others apply to everyone. Local work experience and employer confidence in your visa status are the two that planning can help with most.

If you are already in Australia on a working holiday, see what UK workers should check before moving from a working holiday to sponsorship, from the experience rule to who pays.

One way to build Australian work experience first is a working holiday, and UK passport holders can get a second and third year with no farm work.

Why Australia cares

International students are increasingly seen as a source of skilled workers for shortage areas, and international education contributed more than $50 billion to the economy in 2023-24. Jobs and Skills Australia said graduates who stay could add a lot to the future workforce, but weak transitions into skilled jobs are holding that back, and better outcomes after study are critical.

The findings arrive amid a lively debate over student numbers, with calls from one minor-party senator for deep cuts and the government defending the system. It has set a national planning level of 295,000 international student commencements for 2026 and says it will keep it in 2027. Commencements this year are 8 per cent lower than the same period in 2025 and 13 per cent below 2019 levels.

Planning your route from the UK

  1. Choose a course that leads somewhere specific. Fields with clear career paths in Australia give you a better chance of skilled work.
  2. Build Australian experience early. Placements and part-time work in your field count for a lot with employers.
  3. Present your skills well. Build AI CV can help you set out placements and projects for Australian employers.
  4. Compare routes. If you already have work experience or a trade, a work visa may be more direct. Check the options on the Department of Home Affairs visa listing.
