UK nurse registration in Australia: 1,800 hours could mean 1-6 months, not 9-12

If you are a registered nurse in the UK, getting registered in Australia can now be much quicker than it used to be. Under the NMBA's standard for internationally qualified registered nurses, nurses with at least 1,800 hours of practice in an approved comparable jurisdiction, and the UK is one, can use two additional pathways with no NMBA exam, and the NMBA said eligible nurses may complete registration in 1-6 months rather than the usual 9-12. What the faster route does not change: registration is a separate process from your visa, and you must hold it before you start work as a nurse.
What changed for nurses who practise in the UK
On 27 January 2025 the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) announced the Registration Standard: General Registration for Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses. It added two pathways for registered nurses who have practised at least 1,800 hours in NMBA-approved comparable jurisdictions. Those jurisdictions include the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), Singapore and Spain.
The NMBA said the standard would take effect by April 2025. For eligible nurses, with at least 1,800 hours of practice in a comparable jurisdiction since 2017, it removes the requirement for NMBA examinations or qualification upgrades. You can read the board's own announcement on the NMBA news page for internationally qualified registered nurses.
In plain terms: if you have been working on a ward in Leeds, a community team in Cardiff or a theatre in Belfast for long enough, your NHS or private-sector hours are what open the faster door. The pathways are for registered nurses. Midwives and enrolled nurses should check the NMBA's pages for the rules that apply to them.
What the faster pathway does not do
It does not give you a visa. The NMBA says registration with the NMBA and a visa from Home Affairs are entirely separate processes, and that success in one does not secure the other. It also advises against irreversible decisions, such as resigning or moving to Australia, until registration is approved.
It does not replace the skills assessment for migration either. The NMBA explains that ANMAC performs skills assessments for migration while Ahpra assesses registration applications on the board's behalf. That split is why some applicants are approved for skilled migration but still do not meet the registration requirements.
And it does not skip the standards. Internationally qualified nurses must complete the Self-check and any required assessment stages, and meet the registration standards on Criminal History, English Language Skills, Recency of Practice and Professional Indemnity Insurance Arrangements. All of them must also complete a two-part orientation to Australian healthcare: Part 1 before registration and Part 2 after.
One thing to be clear about: a nursing qualification, an ANMAC outcome or RPL does not make you a registered nurse in Australia, and it does not make you an enrolled nurse either. Only registration with the NMBA, through Ahpra, lets you practise under those titles.
Your NMC certificate of current professional status
Australian regulators will want proof that you are on the NMC register. The NMC calls this a certificate of current professional status (CCPS), also known as a letter of good standing. You request it in your MyNMC account after you have applied to register abroad, with one request per authority. The NMC does not issue paper certificates or fill in other authorities' forms.
If you need certificates for both ANMAC and Ahpra, the NMC says to select ANMAC first and then AHPRA in the same application. The certificate confirms your name and registered address, NMC Pin, date of birth, the dates you were on the register, your qualification and whether there is any fitness to practise sanction, undertaking or warning.
Timing is the catch. The NMC usually issues a CCPS within 24 hours once it has the references it needs, but the certificate is only valid for three months from the date of issue. Ask for it when the authority is ready to use it, not months ahead.
| Step | Who handles it | Timing to plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Registration (Self-check and assessment stages) | NMBA, with Ahpra assessing the application | 1-6 months for eligible nurses, against the usual 9-12 (NMBA estimate) |
| Certificate of current professional status | NMC, through MyNMC | Usually within 24 hours once references are in; valid for three months |
| Skills assessment for migration | ANMAC | Separate from registration |
| Orientation to Australian healthcare | NMBA | Part 1 before registration, Part 2 after |
| UK police certificate | ACRO Criminal Records Office | Up to 20 working days; £70 for one copy |
| Visa | Department of Home Affairs | Separate from registration; apply when registration is on track |
A sensible order of steps from the UK
- Count your hours. Check that you have at least 1,800 hours of practice in a comparable jurisdiction since 2017, and keep payslips, rotas or employer letters that back them up.
- Do the NMBA Self-check. It shows which assessment stages apply to you. The board's page on what to know before you apply sets out the separate roles of the NMBA, Ahpra and ANMAC.
- Apply, then request your CCPS. Request it in MyNMC after applying, selecting ANMAC first and then AHPRA if both need it, and remember the three-month validity.
- Prepare for the standards. Criminal history, English language skills, recency of practice and professional indemnity insurance. gov.uk says you can contact ACRO for a police certificate, which ACRO says can take up to 20 working days.
- Complete Part 1 of the orientation before registration.
- Only when registration is approved, hand in your notice, book the move and lodge the visa your employer and adviser have settled on. Our guide to the Skills in Demand (482) visa from the UK covers the employer-sponsored option.
- Finish Part 2 of the orientation once you are registered.
While registration runs, get your applications ready. Build AI CV can help you set out your clinical areas and hours clearly. Optional: a verified Talent Tabloid profile lets employers check your experience and can help your application stand out. Then browse roles such as this registered nurse job in Wagga Wagga, this community registered nurse role in Darwin or the wider community services jobs.
Processing times for the visa are a separate question, which we covered in why Australian visas for UK nurses and teachers can take longer. New Zealand works differently
The Nursing Council of New Zealand has its own process. Internationally qualified nurses first verify documents with TruMerit: identity, registrations held in the last 10 years, nursing qualifications, English language proficiency and 1,800 hours of post-registration nursing experience. Only then do they apply to the Council.
Everyone also completes two 'Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand' online courses and a criminal history check, and some registered nurses and all enrolled nurses must pass a competence assessment. The Council's fee to process an application is $485 (New Zealand), external providers charge on top, and all fees are non-refundable. Its self-assessment tool has a separate answer for nurses whose education leading to registration was completed in the UK.
Be realistic about demand. The Council says New Zealand has recently employed a large number of internationally qualified nurses, so demand is lower except in some areas such as mental health and addiction, and it encourages nurses to explore employment before applying. Common mistakes UK nurses make
- Resigning too early. The NMBA advises against irreversible decisions until registration is approved.
- Requesting the CCPS months ahead. It is valid for three months from the date of issue.
- Treating an ANMAC outcome as registration. ANMAC assesses for migration; Ahpra assesses registration for the NMBA.
- Assuming every nurse skips the exam. The waiver is for eligible nurses with at least 1,800 hours in a comparable jurisdiction since 2017.
- Leaving the police certificate to the last week. ACRO says up to 20 working days, and advises not to arrange travel or employment until it arrives.
- Getting visa help from an unregistered helper. Anyone giving immigration assistance must be a registered migration agent, a legal practitioner or an exempt person.
Frequently asked questions
Is the UK a comparable jurisdiction for nurse registration in Australia?
Yes. The NMBA's list of comparable jurisdictions includes the United Kingdom, alongside Ireland, the United States, Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), Singapore and Spain. Registered nurses with at least 1,800 hours of practice there can use the two additional pathways.
Do UK nurses still have to sit an NMBA exam?
Eligible nurses do not. The standard removes NMBA examinations or qualification upgrades for nurses with at least 1,800 hours of practice in a comparable jurisdiction since 2017. You still complete the Self-check, meet the registration standards and do the two-part orientation.
How long is an NMC certificate of current professional status valid?
Three months from the date of issue. The NMC usually issues it within 24 hours once it has the references it needs, so request it through MyNMC only after you have applied to register in Australia.
Does NMBA registration mean I have an Australian visa?
No. The NMBA says registration and a visa from Home Affairs are entirely separate processes, and success in one does not secure the other. You must hold registration before you take up employment as a nurse or midwife.
Can a UK qualification or RPL make me a registered nurse in Australia?
No. A qualification or RPL does not make you a registered nurse or an enrolled nurse in Australia. You have to be registered with the NMBA, with Ahpra assessing your application, before you can practise under either title.
Key takeaways
- The UK is an NMBA comparable jurisdiction: 1,800 hours of practice since 2017 opens two faster pathways.
- Eligible nurses skip the NMBA exam, and the NMBA estimated 1-6 months instead of 9-12.
- Registration and the visa are separate: do not resign or move until registration is approved.
- Time your NMC CCPS carefully, because it lasts three months.
- New Zealand starts with TruMerit verification and a $485 (New Zealand) Council fee.
