Health and Safety Manager

Visa sponsorship

Administration · Auckland, New Zealand · Full-Time · Discussed at interview · Visa: Employer sponsored

If you have led health and safety in the UK and fancy swapping the British winter for Auckland, this senior role is worth a look. A values-led environmental and engineering consultancy is recruiting a Health and Safety Manager to run its Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) function right across New Zealand.

Day to day you would lead its own specialist HSW team, develop and maintain the safety systems and keep improving them, champion safe ways of working and help build a positive safety culture. You would also be the person the senior leadership group and those running projects turn to for advice. Senior HSW people from quite different backgrounds are encouraged, whether you have been a hands-on specialist or have already run a team or an entire function.

The employer is an Immigration New Zealand accredited employer, so it can sponsor the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Put your NEBOSH certificate, your HOP or Just Culture work and the teams you have led near the top of an up-to-date CV. Get your HSW CV in shape with Build AI CV before you apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Head up how the organisation designs, refines and assures its HSW systems and processes, so legal duties are met and safe working is the norm
  • Manage and mentor the HSW team, and work hand in glove with senior managers, line managers and project leads
  • Grow a safety culture that puts people at its heart, using training sessions, staff engagement and shared learning
  • Keep track of how HSW is performing (hazards, risks, incidents and the lessons drawn from them), report on it and push results upwards
  • Look after the organisation's key outside relationships with agencies, contractors and suppliers, and keep every HSW system working well, within the law and in step with ISO standards

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A track record of at least 5 years in health and safety, in a comparable post
  • Holds the NEBOSH certificate covering occupational health and safety, or a qualification of the same level
  • Has worked with Donesafe or another comparable HSW information system
  • Can show Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles put to use
  • Knows people-centred approaches to safety, Safety II or Just Culture for instance
  • A strong leader and coach of people who has been in charge of a health and safety team
  • Top-quality facilitation, presenting and writing abilities
  • Strong business acumen, plus a background running H&S systems, incidents, risk and contractors
  • A background in consulting, professional services or engineering would be desirable rather than essential
  • Holds a New Zealand driving licence that is current
