UK driving licence in Australia: the six-month rule and when you must swap it

Tips · 2026-10-23 · 10 min read

A woman hands her driving licence and passport to a staff member at a bright Australian service centre.

You can drive in Australia on your UK driving licence when you first arrive, but not for ever. In New South Wales a temporary overseas visitor can use a current overseas licence for up to six months, and someone who plans to live there longer must get a NSW licence within those six months. The good news for Brits is that the United Kingdom is a recognised country in both NSW and Queensland, so swapping a UK car licence there normally means no knowledge test and no driving test. Heavy vehicle licences are the exception: those tests still apply.

Whether you are a sparky heading for Sydney or a chef bound for Brisbane, here is what the official pages say and the order to do things in.

What a UK licence lets you do when you land

Australia does not have one national licence. gov.uk's Living in Australia guide says road rules and the process for exchanging a UK licence vary by state and territory, so the rule that matters is the one where you will live.

That leaves two questions: how long can you keep driving on your UK photocard, and will the swap involve any tests? The answers are clearest for New South Wales and Queensland, set out below.

New South Wales: the six-month clock

The NSW page for visitors from overseas or interstate is short and firm. A temporary overseas visitor can drive on a current overseas licence for up to six months. If you arrived on or after 1 July 2023 and intend to live in NSW for longer than six months, you must get a NSW driver licence within six months to keep driving.

So the clock starts when you land, not when you find a flat or start a job. Plan the swap for your first weeks, not the last.

The swap itself is where a UK licence helps. NSW's page on knowledge and driving test exemptions lists the United Kingdom as a recognised country. A UK car (class C) or rider (class R) licence holder does not have to pass the knowledge or driving tests for the equivalent NSW licence, as long as the UK licence is current or expired within the last 5 years and is not a learner licence. Read the rest of that page too, because the test exemption does not cover everything else you will be asked to bring.

Queensland: car and motorbike licences without tests

Queensland takes a similar line. Its recognised countries page includes the United Kingdom, so a holder of a UK car or motorcycle licence held within the last 5 years, and not a learner licence, does not need a road rules test or a practical driving test for a Queensland class C, RE or R licence.

Two document points from the Queensland transfer rules are worth knowing. A licence that is not in English needs a recognised translation from a NAATI translator, which a UK photocard does not, since it is already in English. And all documents must be originals, so pack the card itself rather than relying on a photocopy or a photo on your phone.

If you are weighing a role in Brisbane, such as a mining engineer post in Brisbane, the Queensland rules are the ones to read before you go.

Heavy vehicles: where UK HGV drivers lose the shortcut

This is the part that surprises professional drivers. The test exemptions in both states are for cars and motorbikes. NSW says plainly there are no exemptions for heavy vehicle licences. Queensland says a driver from a recognised country who wants to transfer an overseas heavy vehicle licence (class LR, MR, HR, HC or MC) must pass both a road rules test and a practical driving test.

If your plan is to drive trucks, buses or plant for a living, budget the time for those tests before you count on the income. The same goes for trades where the job comes with a work vehicle: a panel beater role in Albury, NSW or a station mechanic job in Broome, WA may involve driving, so ask the employer which licence class the role needs and check the rules for that state.

Do you need an international driving permit?

gov.uk's international driving permit page lists the 1949 international driving permit (IDP) as the type for both Australia and New Zealand. To get one, you need a valid Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence.

Think of the IDP as a companion to your UK licence, not a way around the six-month rule. Check the gov.uk page before you travel, because you get it in the UK, not after you land.

New Zealand: a longer run on your UK licence

If New Zealand is on your list instead, the timings are more generous. gov.uk's Living in New Zealand guide says you can drive there on your UK driving licence for up to 18 months for cars and up to 12 months for motorbikes or trucks, after which you must convert to a New Zealand driving licence.

That 12-month limit for trucks matters if you are looking at heavy plant work, such as a heavy excavator operator role in Auckland. Whether the conversion involves any tests is set by the NZ Transport Agency, so check its conversion rules for your licence class before you commit to a start date. How to swap a UK licence in NSW or Queensland, step by step

  1. Check your UK licence before you leave. Make sure it is a full licence, not a provisional, and that it is current. Both NSW and Queensland only waive the tests for a licence held within the last 5 years that is not a learner licence.
  2. Decide whether you need an IDP. The 1949 type is the one gov.uk lists for Australia, and you need a valid Great Britain or Northern Ireland licence to get it.
  3. Pack the original photocard. Queensland asks for original documents, and the same habit will save you a wasted trip in any state.
  4. Note your arrival date. In NSW, if you arrived on or after 1 July 2023 and are staying longer than six months, the swap must happen within six months of arrival.
  5. Read your state's page. NSW and Queensland are set out above. For Victoria, Western Australia or anywhere else, find that state's own transport page, because gov.uk says the rules vary.
  6. Add the right licence class to your CV. Once the swap is done, update your applications. A clear Australian-style CV from Build AI CV makes it easy to show the licence class an employer asked for.

Common mistakes Brits make with a UK licence in Australia

  • Treating six months as a grace period that can stretch. In NSW, the official wording is that you must get a NSW licence within six months to keep driving if you are staying longer.
  • Assuming an HGV licence swaps like a car licence. It does not: NSW has no exemptions for heavy vehicles, and Queensland requires a road rules test and a practical test.
  • Letting a UK licence lapse before the move. The test exemptions depend on a licence that is current or held within the last 5 years. A licence that has been expired for longer loses that shortcut.
  • Bringing copies instead of the card. Queensland wants originals. A photo on your phone will not do.
  • Reading one state's rules and applying them everywhere. gov.uk is clear that the process varies by state and territory. A rule from Queensland may not hold in Victoria.

If you are on a working holiday and planning a road trip between jobs, factor the licence into your money plan too: our guide to a working holiday budget in pounds covers the costs before you go, and if you later look for an employer to sponsor you, read what UK workers on a 417 should check first. Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in Australia on my UK driving licence?

Yes, for a limited time. In New South Wales a temporary overseas visitor can drive on a current overseas licence for up to six months. Other states set their own rules, so check the transport page for the state where you will live.

Do I have to take a driving test to convert my UK licence in NSW?

Not for a car or motorbike licence. The United Kingdom is a recognised country in NSW, so a UK class C or class R licence holder does not need the knowledge or driving tests if the licence is current or expired within the last 5 years and is not a learner licence.

Can I transfer a UK licence to Queensland without tests?

For cars and motorbikes, yes. Queensland lists the United Kingdom as a recognised country, so a UK car or motorcycle licence held within the last 5 years, and not a learner licence, needs no road rules test or practical test for class C, RE or R. Heavy vehicle classes still need both tests.

Do I need an international driving permit for Australia from the UK?

gov.uk lists the 1949 international driving permit as the type for Australia and New Zealand, and you need a valid Great Britain or Northern Ireland licence to get one. Check the gov.uk page before you travel, because you apply for it in the UK.

How long can I drive in New Zealand on a UK licence?

gov.uk says up to 18 months for cars and up to 12 months for motorbikes or trucks. After that you must convert to a New Zealand driving licence, so check the NZ Transport Agency's conversion rules for your licence class.

Key takeaways

  • Rules for a UK driving licence in Australia vary by state and territory: read the page for the state where you will live.
  • In NSW, people staying longer than six months who arrived on or after 1 July 2023 must get a NSW licence within six months.
  • NSW and Queensland both recognise the UK, so a full UK car or motorbike licence normally swaps without tests.
  • Heavy vehicle licences do not get that exemption: expect a road rules test and a practical test in Queensland.
  • The 1949 IDP is the type gov.uk lists for Australia and New Zealand, and you get it in the UK before you go.
